Naturigin Hair Color Review

Did you know that conventional hair dyes contain damaging chemicals like ammonia, parabens, SLS and other harsh ingredients that wreak total havoc on your overall health and hair? It’s pretty much common sense to know that hair dyes aren’t the best for your hair, however, girls around the world, myself included, continue to turn a blind eye when it comes to this process. I never really knew exactly how bad this process was, but after researching it bit more, I discovered a few things you never want to expose your hair to.

Ingredients to Avoid in Hair Dye-

  • Ammonia– This is one of the worst offenders in the beauty industry.  Ammonia is added to hair color to force open the hair’s cuticle to deposit color, however, this can severely damage the cuticle creating dry, damaged hair. Ammonia is also highly toxic when inhaled, putting you and your stylist at risk.
  • Parabens– As we all know by now, parabens are the enemy. Found in just about every type of beauty product these days, hair dye is no exception. You never want to use products with parabens, as they are continuously being found in breast cancer tumors.
  • SLS– This stands for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and it can be found in the majority of all hair care products today. Many researchers do believe there is a link between SLS and cancer, on top of it being known to cause major skin irritations, hormone imbalances, corrosion of the skin and allergies. There are many products labeled as ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ that still contain sulfates so you do want to double check for these before you buy.

Because I am constantly torn between a green life and a glamorous one, I set out to find a solution to this problem, hoping to find a safer alternative that did not compromise my love for freshly colored locks. Luckily at the Expo West conference I came across Naturigin, a permanent hair color line formulated with Organic and natural essential oils and safer ingredients, but that promised to deliver long lasting, beautiful coverage. So, let’s explore Naturigin further!

 Naturigin-Hair-Color-Review

How is Naturigin Safer?

Naturigin is formulated without:

  • Ammonia
  • Parabens
  • SLS
  • Resorcinol

How Do you Apply Naturigin?

I took the color I wanted to my stylist and had her apply it for me, leaving some of my past highlights out to give it a more balayage look, however, you can apply this color yourself at home with gloves.

naturigin hair dye review

Which Colors Did you Use?

I used 2 boxes of Naturigin 5.0 and about half a tube of the 3.0 color mixed together to form one big batch she then applied to my roots only. Because my hair had lighter areas, next she applied just 5.0 and a small bit of 3.0 to the ends since they saturate the color more. You always want to start with your roots when dying your hair yourself, as they are the healthiest and take the longest to absorb the color. So to recap:

I used two tubes of 5.0, mixed with half of one 3.0 tube for roots and about 3 inches down. On the ends she used the rest of the 5.0 with a small amount of 3.0 to finish.

How Did the Color Turn Out?

Awesome! My stylist kept warning me that it could turn out terrible, but it surprised us both and came out awesome. I love the brown, it’s the perfect chocolate brown with a splash of red.

naturigin hair dye review

How Does it Fade?

I have had this color for about 2 weeks now and so far, I am happy with the hold-up! The last time I dyed my hair with conventional dye it washed out within 2 weeks and while this one has faded a bit, it’s held up much better than expected.

This product is still very much a dye, so it will hold up better than a plant based natural dye. While it is amazing that they make plant-based dyes, the entire point of dye is to last, so you sort of have to pick and choose your battles here. If you want something 100% natural, this dye may not be for you, as it does still have chemicals in it, but because of those chemicals, the dye will last a decent length of time.

How Safe is Naturigin?

As I mentioned above, to ensure the product holds up there are some chemicals in this dye to keep the color long lasting. Without these chemicals, the dye would be a semi-permanent color and would not perform very well. To ensure their products are as safe as possible, while still performing well, Naturigin has formulated its products with the lowest amount of chemicals possible (0.075% ppd) and they are sold in north European pharmacies which required extensive testing to get there.

I would not suggest using this dye if you are pregnant or with a compromised immune system, as again, these still contain chemicals. I also do not plan on using this often, but if you are in need of a dye this would be one of the safest permanent dyes, if not the safest, on the market.

What Colors Does This Come in?

Naturigin comes in 19 different colors, covering a wide variety of shades- Blonde, Brunette, Red, Black & a few other beautiful shades in between. Check out all of the colors here.

Where Can you Buy it?

You can buy Naturigin at The Vitamin Shoppe for $16.99 here.

Overall, this is a great alternative to the conventional permanent dyes you may see at a drug store or your favorite hair salon and I am very happy with my results! If you live in the San Diego area and need a stylist to apply this, contact Angela at Salon Radiance II here.

Innersense Organic Hair Care Review

If you are in the market for a safer, truly good-for-your-hair, non-toxic, hydrating hair care routine, today’s post has got you covered. When I first started my quest for cleaner beauty, I found myself grabbing just about anything that had the words organic on it, later to learn that even though an item may be organic, it can still contain damaging ingredients. This seemed to be the case with the shampoos I was using, as they ended up being not as great as I had hoped when examined further. While the ingredients were not toxic or carcinogenic, they simply were not the best things to put on my hair, most being just temporary fixes to ensure shiny hair fast.

While many organic shampoos contain “All Natural” ingredients, most of those ingredients are extracted through a chemical process, which changes them from their original and natural composition. When used, these ingredients leave a fine film on the hair, leaving it feeling smooth, silky and clean, which sounds ideal, but it’s not, why not you say?

Well, because we’ve become so accustomed to using conventional shampoos that have synthetic or processed fillers in them, leaving us with that smooth and silky feeling after shampooing, people now think that feeling is what “clean” hair feels like.  It’s actually not clean though because that silky smooth feeling is coming from the remaining film left behind from those ingredients, versus your hair’s actual condition. Clean hair should have texture to it, makes sense right?

Now that I had to toss out yet another batch of what I thought to be clean products, I had to start all over, however, the company Innersense made this easy on me as they offer an entire hair care line designed to bring out the absolute best in your hair. That means no high heat processing, no synthetics, no fillers, no nonsense, just clean, awesome Organic hair care products that actually work wonders on your hair’s long term health.

Before I go into my review of their products, I would like to feature my favorite selling points of the Innersense Line:

  • Innersense uses Organic, wild-harvested ingredients and cold-pressed, steam distilled extracts to produce hand made clean products.
  • The score the cleanest possible 0 on the Think Dirty app, a hard score to get!
  • They are a small boutique company, family owned, with the best Customer Service.
  • They work with local farmers who have demonstrated a commitment towards the environment by how they harvest their ingredients.
  • They support environmental sustainability, making only the soundest choices in the makeup of their products, packaging and working environment.
  • They are a Certified Green Business.
  • They comply with environmental regulations, taking extra steps to conserve energy and water, reduce waste and prevent pollution.
  • They are very transparent, providing a comprehensive Glossary to help you understand all of the ingredients in their products, they also will help answer any and all questions you have!
  • They believe in kindness to animals, proudly bearing the Leaping Bunny logo certifying they do not test on animals and neither do any of their suppliers.
  • They donate a portion of their profits to environmental causes and other worthy charities.
  • They are genuinely passionate about getting your hair in the best shape of its life.

Whoa, that was a long list but, as you can see, they have so many great selling points, it makes it easy to support such an ethical company, their awesome products are just an added bonus. Now that you can see how amazing their stance on the beauty industry is, let’s chat about some of my favorite items!

Innersense Color Awakening Shampoo & Conditioner-

I do not wash my hair every day, but when I do, this is the duo I am currently using, and have been using for the past 2 months. This Color Awakening Shampoo is a gentle cleansing shampoo for color treated hair, hand crafted from the Certified Organic and Bio-Dynamic ingredients of coconut and palm oils, pumpkin seed, and shea butter, to provide a luxurious cleansing. The Sunflower Seed extracts, a natural anti-oxidant, protects your color from fading, all while adding a glorious shine.

The Color Radiance Conditioner also revitalizes and nourishes color treated hair by using natural proteins, aromatic oils, and flower essences. This lightweight and build up free formula moisturizes and strengthens the hair while providing even more resilience and shine.

innersense shampoo

How to Use-

To use these products, simply shampoo as you normally would, inhaling the aromatic scents of coconut and palm oils, orange flower oil, pumpkin seed oil, shea butter and sunflower seed oil. The shampoo really lathers well, despite it’s clean ingredients and the smell really is very fresh and pleasing. I did find that my hair was a little greasy after a few washes, so on greasier days I will shampoo twice.

The conditioner hydrates really well so I use this on my ends only to ensure I do not weigh my hair down. I suggest only conditioning on the dry parts of your hair to start.

Sweet Spirit Leave in Conditioner-

This leave in conditioner really is one of my favorite products by Innersense as it really just does its job flawlessly! Whenever I use this item, my hair brushes out easily and is much easier to manage. With magical ingredients like honey, lavender, rooibos, rosemary and tamanu oil, this Sweet Spirit Leave in conditioner really is the best leave in conditioner I have found to date.

I Create Volume-

This I Create Volume was designed to add a boost of volume, from roots to ends, with Certified Organic Honey and Aloe. Organic Rooibos Tea brings anti-oxidant protection while Wheat Amino Acids combined with Eucalyptus deliver moisture and nutrients to improve your hair’s elasticity and shine.

While I typically loveee root boost products, I did not find that this one gave me a ton of volume like the toxic ones do, but I would say that it gave it a little boost when I applied it and blow dried my hair upside down and with a large round brush.

I Create Finish-

Finding a safe, clean hair spray has been tough, but again, Innersense has come to the rescue by creating this I Create Finish product. This hair spray is made with Certified Organic Honey, which acts as a natural resin while Organic Rooibos Tea supplies a much needed anti-oxidant protection. Aloe and Rice Proteins then offer extra moisture and strength and the Certified Organic Lavender will soothe the senses.

This product really does hold up well, but because it’s non-aerosol, I find that it works best on ponytails or first sprayed on hands and then applying to the areas you want to tame. The spray may be a bit too powerful and heavy for a full on squirt into a head of fresh curls unless you spritz from at least 10 inches away and let it gently fall into your hair. I personally prefer spritzing this into my hands first and then applying where it’s needed.

innersense organic hair care review

Harmonium Healing Oil-

This was one of the first products I was able to try from this line, and to this day, still one of my all time favorites! Not only does this Harmonium Healing Oil work wonders on the ends of dry, damaged hair, the real magic happens when this is applied directly to your dry, irritated scalp! I have seen a huge improvement in my scalp’s condition when I use this regularly, so for anyone with any scalp issues, I strongly suggest you give this a try.

Harmonic Healing Oil is made from Certified Organic Safflower and Evening Primrose Oils, combined with the healing properties of sacred Tamanu Oil. This luscious oil is rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins and antioxidants, with added anti-inflammatory properties that soothe dry or irritated skin just about anywhere.

So, as you can see Innersense has an amazing line up of products and is most definitely a line I feel confident in suggesting you all try out. Their team truly wants the best for everyone and has worked hard to get my hair to a much healthier place. If you have any specific hair questions, their team is happy to help, feel free to head to their website to learn more, and from there, shoot them an email with any and all questions you may have.

As always, I have set up an organicbunny coupon code, saving you 20% off their entire line. This is a great deal so if you could use any of these items I would definitely stock up now!

Prim Botanicals Review

One of my all time favorite beauty products has to be hair oil, and after learning about how damaging my beloved Morrocan Oil is, I was desperately in need of a much cleaner alternative. Before I tell you more about my safer swap, I would like to take a second to talk about why products like MorrocanOil are so damaging for us. While most people probably assume that these products are simply natural oils that nourish and tame our wild tresses, the ingredients of these products are anything but.

So, what’s really inside MoroccanOil’s hair products? Take a peek!

  • D&C Red-17– This is used as a colorant and is considered a class 3 carcinogen. You should avoid all products with this ingredient in it, at all times. Skin absorption has been seen.
  • Parabens– These preservatives may cause healthy cells to grow and survive like cancerous cells and can also be found in various breast tumors. Parabens are also endocrine disruptors with multiple links to allergic reactions.
  • Fragrances– A combination of over 3,000 fragrances can be added into our beauty products, which very often lead to hormone disruptions and allergic reactions.
  • Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone– This is added to leave a pleasant fragrance, however, this is toxic to aquatic organisms and can cause various allergic reactions.
  • Cyclomethicone– This is a silicon based compound.
  • Coumarin– Used to increase aroma, this ingredient can lead to skin irritations or allergic reactions.
  • Behentrimonium Chloride– Another ingredient known to cause irritations to the skin.

As you can see, the entire MorroconOil line is infested with ingredients that harm more than they help, which is why it’s very important to toss this line out and opt for a safer alternative instead. To see for yourself, just how dirty MorroconOil products are, give them a scan on the Think Dirty App!

And now for the fun part, meet Prim Botanicals, the safer, natural, all around better substitution! Prim Botanicals is a hair and skin care line made up entirely of natural products, designed to actually improve the condition of your hair, face and skin! While I am a huge fan of their body and face oils, my very favorite product by them is certainly their hair oil.

The Hair Oil-

This hair oil really is so awesome, and it’s no wonder it’s a personal fave as it’s made up of so many hydrating ingredients! Made from ingredients like coconut oil, camellia oil, argan oil, tamanu oil, marula oil and more, this hair treatment is a definite must have, and can be used in a few fun ways! Use this one product as a leave in treatment before washing your hair, as a hot oil treatment to hydrate dry scalps, or on wet hair as a leave-in treatment before styling!

I love using this in all three ways but mostly use this as an after styling oil to tame frizzy ends. Just a few drops of this oil goes a long way, leaving me with silky soft, shiny hair.

Prim Botanicals Review

The Face & Body Oil-

If you are also a fan of face and body oils, they have these available as well! Their infamous body oil is designed to even out stretch marks as well as heal signs of eczema. This oil smells so amazing, you will surely be left feeling like you are on a tropical vacation after inhaling the aromatic hazelnut, almond, and camellia oils!

Potion #2-

As if these hydrating oils weren’t enough, they also offer little booster oils you can combine with their other oils for that extra punch! This Potion #2 is made for those with more intense problems like eczema, stretch marks, psoriasis, scars, rashes, burns, razor burn and bites! Simply massage this into the problem area and watch it transform. This is best layered with one of their base oils.

Overall this is a super sweet line to support, their products perform amazing and you won’t have to worry about your hair’s condition or your health when using them.

Kiss frizzy hair goodbye thanks to these super cute, eco-chic hair wraps by Hubalou! These bamboo-fiber wraps not only ensure your hair stays frizz free, they also prevent the damage that typically comes from using terrycloth or microfiber towels! Have no fear, these are amazing for all hair types, as everyone can benefit from damage and frizz free hair right!? I have pin straight hair and really do love these for drying my hair each day.

T3 Whirl Trio Review

I love curly hair which is why this year I asked Santa for the T3 Micro Whirl Trio  convertible curling iron. Not only is this iron the cutest thing ever, hello bright white and rose gold combo, it’s also one of the best irons I’ve ever used! I typically avoid clipless curling irons because they’re not the best for easy everyday use, however, I definitely will be using this iron more often now that I see how easy it is to use- Simply click in the barrel of your choice, turn on and go!

I was spoiled by Santa as this T3 Whirl Trio comes with three interchangeable barrels- A 1″ straight barrel, a 1.25″ tapered barrel and lastly, a 1.5″ straight barrel which probably will be my favorite of the bunch as I love bigger, more glam curls. In the photo above I used the 1.25″ tapered barrel which gave me a super tight perfect curl with lots of bounce! I had not finished my hair yet as I stopped to do the rest on Periscope so please forgive the unfinished look here. This also comes with barrels that have clips as well, so, if you want just a basic curling iron barrel, they have that too!

T3 Whirl Trio Review

T3 Whirl Trio Review

This iron can be used the same as any other clipless iron so there really is not much more to it but what makes this iron special is that it’s made out of Tourmaline, a semi-precious gemstone that when heated emits negative ions to help reduce frizz and static! This iron also only needs to be used once on hair meaning there is no need to redo curls, again and again, thanks to the SinglePass™ technology that monitors the temp to ensure consistent heat delivery.

Overall this is a great iron and, so far, I am very happy with it’s results! I also think it’s a great deal to have 3 irons in one. To learn more about this product, or to shop, you can head to their site here!

Arya Essentials Luxury Oils

Every now and then I tend to splurge, however, whatever it is, always has to be worth it. I recently came across a brand called Arya Essentials, and while yes, it is a bit on the pricier side, when you learn more about the line you realize that the luxurious ingredients certainly justify the cost! So, for anyone who wants the best of the best when it comes to their oils, Arya Essentials is it! Of course, there are more affordable options, but today I will share more about this line for those interested!

Arya Essentials Philosophy-

  • Always use Organic, Wild-Crafted, and Biodynamic ingredients from sustainable sources.
  • Their products never contain GMOs, sulfates, mineral oils, synthetic dyes or scents, gluten or fillers.
  • All products and ingredients are Cruelty-Free, always.
  • Arya Essential always strives to bring you products of the purest and highest quality to heal and revitalize your skin as you embark on your personal journey to a more naturally beautiful you.

Now that you know how amazing their brand is, let’s talk about the two items I tried from the line! Arya Essentials was kind enough to send me these two items, however, I was not obligated to share them with you unless I enjoyed them. I am happy to report that I did!

Hair Oil-

If you follow me closely, you will know I love hair oils. I have color treated hair which means my ends can be frizzy at times so I always have a hair oil on call. What’s unique about this Hair Oil, though, is that not only does it work to tame frizz on the ends, you can also use this to nourish your scalp and promote hair growth by applying it to your entire scalp as well. Formulated with Coconut, Amla, and other vital essential oils, this hair oil is so soothing on my scalp, like a big glass of water. The smell is a light Jasmine, Lavender mix but it’s very, very subtle.

Arya Essentials Luxury Oils

Directions: I like to apply this to my entire head, scalp to ends, leaving it on when I sleep at night or whenever I have some downtime to let it saturate in. After I wash it out the following day my hair is so smooth and shiny, it really is such a treat for dry scalps!

Body Oil-

There is nothing I love more than to slather my skin with Rosehip Seed, Neroli, and Brahmi oils to increase my skin’s elasticity and boost collagen, which is why this Body Oil has quickly become a fave. The mix of Coconut and Sesame Oil keeps my skin soothed, nourished and balanced without being overly greasy.

Directions: I like to apply this right out of the shower while my pores are still open. Simply apply a small amount, where needed, and enjoy hydrated skin all day long!

Arya Essentials Luxury Oils

Coupon Code-

Overall, I really did enjoy this line and hope to check out some of the other items as well. I love that Arya uses only the very best ingredients as keeping my routine truly pure and green is essential. I have set up the code organicbunny to take 15% OFF their entire site so if you see anything you’d like to try that will save you at checkout! <SHOP>

Using this code alone reduced the price by $10, so be sure to enter that in if you do decide to shop, I love saving $$! And no, I am not an affiliate and not earning a commission on this blog, this code is 100% for you to save money.

Best Organic Sugaring in San Diego

$
0
0

I don’t know where I have been living, but I am just now discovering Sugaring?! Sugaring is nothing new, as this has been how many removed unwanted hair, even the Egyptians way back when. Basically, in simple terms, Sugaring is a way to remove face and body hair, similar, but much safer than, waxing! By heating up just Organic Cane Sugar, Lemon Juice & Water, a sticky, honey, putty-like paste is formed, that is then applied straight to the skin, wherever you’d like to remove the hair. This method of hair removal is much safer because it’s far less damaging to the skin, doesn’t involve super hot wax on your skin, still performs the exact same way waxing does and it’s so natural, you can literally eat it!

I have never waxed or done any serious hair removal before so, this was a whole new experience for me! I was super nervous, scared it would hurt and unsure what the results would be, however, I left pleasantly surprised and super happy with my super soft, hairless new skin! Because I try and only use Organic beauty products, finding an Organic Sugaring studio was really important to me! I found Cleo Sugaring in La Jolla which turns out to be the only place in San Diego that is truly entirely Organic, sign me up!

To break it down a bit more for you, here are some bullet points on how it works!

Why I loved Organic Sugaring at Cleo Sugaring-

  • San Diego’s only 100% Natural & Organic Sugaring studio.
  • Made with just 3 ingredients: Organic Cane Sugar, Lemon & Water.
  • Hair can be removed after just 4-7 days of growth after shaving.
  • Sugaring does not stick to live skin cells which is huge for your skin’s health! Sugaring only removes dead skin cells to prevent any risk of tearing.
  • It exfoliates off every spec of dead skin, great prep for a spray tan too!
  • Sugar paste is lukewarm, not hot like wax, which prevents burning!
  • After sugaring, she also had tons of Organic products she applied after to keep the skin super calm and soothed.
  • After continued use, the hair follicle starts to deplete which leads to permanent removal.

What I Sugared & Did it Hurt?!

I decided to start out with my arms, armpits, lip, hands & feet. Ultimately, I want to do my legs and bikini area too, however, I had to start small because I am a wimp. Leslie, the CEO of Cleo Sugaring was super nice and did her best to keep my brain busy to not focus on the pain and while the armpits were pretty painful, the rest of my body was bareable pain. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the worst, I would say my arms were a 6, armpits an 8.5 and the rest maybe a 5.5. I was never in pain enough to cry, but there were moments where I needed a breather. I think next time I will definitely grab a cocktail before hehe.

How Long Does it Last?

Sugaring lasts the same as waxing, it just depends on your hair re-growth, as no two people’s are alike. I will update this with how long it lasted when I know better.

Coupon Code-

Overall, I am obsessed with the results so far. My hair is very dark and coarse, so to have clean armpits with no black specs or irritations seriously is priceless. Everywhere she sugared is so baby soft and totally hairless. I asked Leslie from Cleo Sugaring if she wanted to share a special with you all and she generously offered 50% OFF your entire first visit, simply mention “organicbunny” when booking.

Location & Booking-

Cleo Sugaring is located in La Jolla, right across from Trilogy Sanctuary, my favorite Organic eatery! This works out perfect because now I can book with her and then pop on over for a healthy snack right after. To book an appointment with Leslie the info is below. Must-Have Tools-

How I Color My Hair-

To avoid excess fumes, I dye my hair just two times a year with BioKap 90% Natural hair dye. For the balayage, my hair stylist uses toxic lighteners, but we do those just once a year and on the ends only to avoid scalp absorption. It’s not perfect but it’s what works for me.

If you are in San Diego, my stylist’s name is Angela and you can text her to book at 619-201-7638, she is the best I’ve found in my 32 years here on Earth and I am impossible to please! She’s pricey but, like I said, she only does balayage on me once a year so it’s 100% worth the price.

I think that’s it for now, these are all of the items I use almost every single time I wash my hair so, hopefully, these tips help you all out! Let me know any faves you have in the comments below, always looking for new ones! xo

Need a clean body oil that works on both hair + skin!? If so, this Jordan Seban Hair L’Huile oil does exactly that and then some! Made with just 7 Certified Organic Oils, this product works hard to restore hair damage from heat or over processing all while also working wonders to protect the hair before both styling or swimming! 💆🏻

When using as a body moisturizer, simply massage into the skin to create a satin-soft finish! I love this oil because it actually absorbs into the skin and doesn’t leave me feeling sticky or oily at all! 🙌🏻 My favorite use for this is probably applying to my dry hair before swimming as the oils protect the hair against the harsh effects of chlorinated pools and even sea salt! This has a more plant like scent so if you prefer products without a super girly floral scent, this would be a great option.

How to Repair Damaged Hair, Naturally!

$

Let’s face it, if you own hair styling tools or like to dye your hair, chances are your hair might be suffering from some damage! Considering I used to have bleach blonde hair, then jet black hair and now have a more natural hair color, I am no stranger to hair damage which is why I wanted to do a blog on exactly how I repaired my hair after some major self-inflicted damage! First, yes, there is some hope at growing longer, healthier hair, however, the downside is it simply takes major commitment and time. So, without further rambles, here are my personal tips for repairing damaged hair!

How to Repair Damaged Hair, Naturally-

  1. Shampoo & Conditioner- Because conventional hair products are full of cheap, oil stripping ingredients like sulfates, you will want to change to a cleaner, more gentle shampoo as soon as you can. Haircare products make a huge difference in your results as they will no longer strip your hair of the beneficial oils it needs to stay healthy and protected. For a full breakdown of the products I use religiously, click here. I also only wash my hair about 2-3 times a week in total. The other days I do ponytails, buns or hats!
  2. Reduce Styling- No, you don’t have to stop styling your hair forever but if you can reduce the amount you style it, that will help a ton! Working from home means I never style my hair and I must say, wearing buns and ponytails for the last 2 years of my life has majorly paid off. Every single time you subject your hair to heat, pulling, brushing, teasing, straightening, round brushing, blow-drying, etc… you are damaging your hair. The less you can style your hair, the better, adjust anyways you can.
  3. Reduce Hair Colorings- When I was blonde, I was dying my hair every month. As you can imagine, my hair was in horrible condition. I finally came to my senses and realized women look best with their natural hair color, in my opinion, and stopped dying my hair different colors. It took some time but I dyed my hair back to my natural color and left it alone for almost 6 months and cut off all of the majorly dead sections. Sometimes, cutting off the damage is the only hope. True hair health can really only happen when new, fresh hair grows so the less you can damage your hair, the better, obvi! Now, I literally only dye my hair once a year with minimal color to reduce damage and avoid toxic fumes.
  4. Heat Protectants- If you can not stop styling your hair for a while, at the very least you will want to make darn sure to protect your hair before you style it. I personally use the Innersense Leave-in Conditioner to detangle and protect the hair from heat, and also the Jordan Seban balm after brushing, before blowdrying. This duo makes sure the strands stay coated and protected if I do style.
  5. Hair Ties- Because I wear a whole lot of ponytails and buns, I try to avoid thick rubber band hair ties as much as I can as they lead to MAJOR breakage. Every time I use one, I end up ripping huge chunks of hair out which leads to split ends and flyaways, aka- damage. I personally love using velvet scrunchies instead. You can get your own Organic Bunny scrunchis here.
  6. Hair Masks- To ensure my hair stays hydrated, nourished and healthy, I love doing hair masks at least once a week. Self-care is so important as the better you look, the better you feel. That sounds shallow but… you know what I mean. When your hair and skin is looking healthy and strong, it can only improve your mood 😉 My two favorite hair masks are the Jordan Seban mask or the Innersense Mask! Both are super clean and work wonders on my dry ends.
  7. Ditching Terrycloth Towels- Because terrycloth towels are made with tiny loops of rough fabric, this can lead to breakage and excess frizz. You should always opt for a more soft and gentle towel for drying your hair if you can. My all-time favorite hair towels are the bamboo ones by Hubalou! These are a must-have item for curly-haired gals, those with fine hair or anyone in general that wants to avoid breakage.
  8. Diet & Vitamins- While I do take vitamins occasionally, I am not that good about being consistent with pill form so I try to eat certain nutrients instead. Loading up on things like Vitamin A and C packed Spinach, Guavas, Peppers, Citrus and Strawberries to prevent breakage and Vitamin D to encourage new hair growth are just two important parts of a healthy hair routine! If you need an easy way to get more greens in each day, this Organic Greens Powder is my fave to add to smoothies. I do think going full Vegan this year has majorly increased my hair growth from what I can tell.
  9. Iron- Those with iron deficiencies can suffer from hair loss so making sure you get enough Iron each day is key to having healthy hair! Women between 14 – 50 should aim for around 15-18mg a day. If you are noticing much thinner hair, you can have your doctor test your Iron levels to see if they are low. Some iron-packed faves of mine are- lentils, kidney beans, sesame seeds, quinoa, swiss chard, pumpkin seeds, and chickpeas!⚡
  10. Protein- Part of growing healthy, new hair is making sure you are getting in enough protein each day. Most people that eat primarily healthy do get plenty of protein in each day, however, if you are in need of a Vegan and Organic protein powder as a quick way to get some nutrients in, my current favorite is by Ora Organic! In just 1 smoothie, you will get 21g of protein which will hopefully support new hair growth! Some high protein plant items you can also strive to eat each day are spinach, kale, broccoli, mushrooms, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumbers, and peppers.
  11. Omega 3’s- To not only prevent hair loss and breakage but to also encourage healthy and full hair, you will want to be sure to get your Omega 3’s in each day and no, salmon is not the only way to do this! Chia seeds, leafy greens, hemp seeds, berries, beans, flax seeds, and black walnuts are all great sources of omega 3 which assist in nourishing your hair’s follicles and encouraging overall more hair growth and health.
  12. Quality Hair Brushes- Many brushes can yank and damage hair when brushing but not these! These TEK Brushes are not only eco-friendly, Vegan and non-toxic but super high performance as well, great for scalp stimulation and keeping hair tangle-free!

This was just a quick blog as many were asking me how to get longer, stronger and healthier hair so I wanted to just get something up! As I think of more tips and tricks, I will continue to update them here! XO

Get to Know Sahajan-

If you have yet to try the Sahajan skincare line out, you really will want to as the entire collection is based upon Ayurveda. Ayurveda, translated from Sanskrit, means the Science of Life and it’s a mind-body science that reminds that us we need to be in balance. Modern-day stressors, the environment, toxins, pollutants, and diet can often get us out of balance. Ayurveda seeks to understand each person’s unique needs and looks to plant-based remedies, yoga, meditation, and other practices to achieve that balance.

The entire commitment of this brand to bring you evidence-based products that balance healthy, mindful living with the rich heritage of the Ayurvedic traditions in which the owner Lisa was raised with. MLMs I Avoid

We all know them… and while some are amazing, sadly, for the most part, multi-level marketing companies are not the best choice when it comes to both food and beauty products. Most of the food companies like Shakeology and Isagenix are loaded with non-Organic ingredients, sugar, natural flavors, inflammatory fillers, processed ingredients, and vitamins made in a lab instead of from real food. Many reps also falsely represent these brands, labeling them Organic yet so many times, there will not be a single Organic ingredient in the product. The truth is, navigating the MLM world is HARD so I wanted to generate some responses for those of you that want to avoid these products but are not sure how to explain it to your friends!

Instead of going in too deep on why I avoid these brands, this blog is more so designed to serve as a tool for responses. I will apologize in advance for anyone this blog hurts as I am sure many reps will come here upset but I hope it will encourage you to consider signing up for one of the better MLMs out there. Please also remember, we all have varying standards, and mine happens to be pretty extreme as I avoid things many other clean brands allow like lake dyes, perfumes & phenoxyethanol.

When it comes to food, my friend Food Babe has already done a pretty great break down of the MLM shakes on her blog so I will link you there for the food portion in hopes that it helps! When it comes to shakes and the healthy foods you are consuming daily, what’s inside really counts! Head here for Food Babe’s shake break down.

Now, my turn- Beauty! I would say 90% of my inbox is full of DMs asking me to review a handful of the same brands over and over again so this will serve as my quick response on why I personally will not use these brands and hopefully it will give you more of a starting point to research if you would like to continue using the items or not.

Please note- the below ingredients are just some, of the reasons I avoid these products. There are so many synthetic ingredients in each of these lines, it would take me months to review each one. This blog is also not for in-depth data or research, it is more so the ingredients I personally avoid, designed to help you make the best choices possible.

How to Respond to MLM-

We all have gotten them, the texts, emails, or DMs asking us if we’d like to learn more about a new product, and sadly, my answer is NO most of the time. I think what many struggle with is how to firmly but politely let your friends know that you are not interested in the items but, at the same time, educating them on why you are not interested to hopefully inspire them to learn more about what they are selling. So, this blog is for you! Of course, you should adjust the dialogue to be yourself, these are really just examples!

MLM Example Message- “Hey Amanda! I was just looking at your dog rescue, wow great job!!! I am so happy to see you doing so well and I love that you are into clean beauty, I am too! I just started my own venture with Arbonne products and I would love to show you more about it sometime!”

My response would be-

Aweee thank you so much for thinking about me and I am so glad you are doing well too! I have actually looked into that brand before and while it looked really nice, there were too many potentially irritating ingredients for me and it’s not truly as clean as they say they are. My skin is really sensitive so I can’t stray from my current routine but thank you!

If they push back and ask for more info try to keep it cordial, there is no point arguing or wasting time tit for tatting. They will most likely respond back upset as you are now telling them their method of income is not as great as they may have thought. Have compassion for them the best you can and predict this type of response so you can respond with kindness. They usually say, oh really? Which ingredients do you feel are irritating or unsafe? So, below are each MLM and the ingredients I avoid and why. If an argument continues, I would wrap it up with something like this-

You asked me to share why I avoid this line so I shared my reasons. I don’t feel I need to defend my stance and neither do you if it’s something you enjoy. Good luck with it all!

MLM’s I Avoid-

Arbonne- They claim to be healthy to the mind, body, and skin and good for the planet, however, they are not. They also claim they collaborate with holistic experts and have “high clean standards” but that is not reflected, in my opinion, in their current offerings. They go on and on and on about their high standards but really, their products are mediocre. They are not Organic, they are not 100% Natural and they use many synthetic ingredients with links to hormone disruption, allergic reactions, endocrine disruption, and more.

  • Retinyl Palmitate- Tested on animals finding it may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions.
  • Phenoxyethanol- Often made from carcinogens. Contact allergen with links to endocrine disruption.
  • Butylene Glycol- Often from petroleum with links to skin irritations and dermatitis.
  • Polysorbates- An ethoxylated compound with possible ethylene oxide contamination.
  • Disodium EDTA- Penetration enhancer, an environmental pollutant, toxicity in mammals.
  • Fragrance- Links to allergic reactions, headaches, hormone disruption + nausea.
  • Lake Dyes- Derived from coal tar with links to asthma, allergic reactions, and dermatitis.
  • Ppg-26-Buteth-26- Concern with organ system toxicity, known skin irritant.
  • PEG-40 Castor Oil- Castor oil mixed with ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen.

Beautycounter- While I appreciate Beautycounter’s commitment to lobbying for cleaner cosmetics, I personally think they could improve their offerings a bit more. Yes, they do better than most and they do have some decent options but, there are brands doing it better which is why it’s not one I have the need to reach for. If they removed the below two red flags, I would consider using the line at that time.

  • Phenoxyethanol- Often made from carcinogens. Contact allergen with links to endocrine disruption.
  • Lake Dyes- Derived from coal tar with links to asthma, allergic reactions, and dermatitis.

Monat- Ohhhh Monat, yes, you do have some ok options but you also leave a lot unknown. Perhaps one of my biggest issues with them, besides the surplus of people blaming them for their hair loss, is their use of fragrance in both their hair and skincare items. I found a few different breakdowns of their fragrance but none of which showed me that it was a 100% Natural scent. Their website does the typical “our fragrances are safe” dance without really answering what it is which is a deal-breaker for me. The truth is, it is not an all-natural scent so that is an automatic no from me. They also use perfumes and Tetrasodium EDTA in their pet line which is made from formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. They also make a pet deodorizer with fragrance being third on their ingredient list.

  • Fragrance- Links to allergic reactions, headaches, hormone disruption + nausea.
  • Butylene Glycol- Often from petroleum with links to skin irritations and dermatitis.
  • Behentrimonium Chloride- Links to skin and eye irritations.
  • Benzyl Alcohol- Known human allergen deemed dangerous for the environment.
  • Tetrasodium EDTA- Made from formaldehyde a known carcinogen. Penetration enhancer.

Rodan & Fields- Ugh, perhaps the one I avoid the most, R&F. Known for their lawsuits due to allergic reactions and drooping eyelids. It shows a lot about them as a brand to know that many women are suffering from horrible reactions from their products and yet, they refuse to reformulate the most problematic products. When I went to see if their Lash Boost still contained Isopropyl Cloprostenate, I used copy and paste to see if those words were on the page. They were not. I quickly noticed that those ingredients were pasted as a graphic making it impossible for me to search for the words “Isopropyl Cloprostenate” yet their other product ingredients are not listed in graphic form? Seems a bit sketchy…

They also are one of the few MLMs left to continue paraben use with some of their items containing up to FIVE parabens. They then use lake dyes in their skincare which is utterly pointless and just adds to the risks. Another thing really concerning about this line is the amount of penetration enhancing ingredients they use, that means, certain ingredients are designed to increase penetration which allows other toxic ingredients to potentially enter your bloodstream. What makes me sad is how many women may be pregnant or immune-compromised using this line as this line truly comes with elevated risks that can lead to toxin accumulation that stays inside of us for years even after stopping use.

  • Isopropyl Cloprostenate- Glaucoma drug with links to eye irritations, blurred vision & swelling.
  • Hydroquinone- Bleaching agent banned in many countries, classified as a skin toxicant and allergen.
  • Chlorphenesin- Known muscle relaxant with links to allergic reactions.
  • Octisalate- Penetrates the skin, links to allergies, and sperm cell disruption.
  • Octocrylene- Chemical in SPF with links to contact dermatitis and allergies.
  • Propylene Glycol- Another penetration enhancer suspected to be a reproductive and skin toxin.
  • Butylene Glycol- Often from petroleum with links to skin irritations and dermatitis.
  • Polysorbates- An ethoxylated compound with possible ethylene oxide contamination.
  • Fragrance- Links to allergic reactions, headaches, hormone disruption + nausea.
  • Phenoxyethanol- Often made from carcinogens. Contact allergen with links to endocrine disruption.
  • Lake Dyes- Derived from coal tar with links to asthma, allergic reactions, and dermatitis.
  • DMDM Hydantoin- Formaldehyde releasing agent. Links to skin, eye, and lung irritations.
  • PEGs- Links to irritations and redness with contamination concerns.
  • Parabens- Links to reproductive health and endocrine disruptions. Estrogen mimicking.

Better MLM Options-

For those wanting a better MLM, I really love Crunchi especially because they use NONE of the above. I also love Nature’s Sunshine for supplements. Of course, I am in the business of selling cleaner products but this blog is truly in no way designed to benefit myself. This is just my personal reasoning for avoiding these lines for those that consistently ask! I plan to add LipSense, It Works!, Mary Kay, Melaleuca, Avon & Scentsy to this blog but each takes up so much time so I will have to add them later!

Have an MLM I left off? Shoot me a comment to have me add it below!
